Regolith

Regolith consists of the rocks, rubble, dust and debris that covers the surface of Mars. Basalt fiber extracted from the regolith, combined with certain bioplastics, will be the feedstock material for 3D printing buildings on Mars. This has the main benefit of using local materials, reducing the amount of items which would need to be shipped to Mars, but also allows for blueprints to be designed on Earth and reduces the time astronauts need to spend on design and manufacturing.
